November 11, 2015 — Gartner publishes its Customer Data MDM evaluation, positioning Orchestra Networks as a Visionary and documenting EBX5's cross-domain foundation.
In 2015, Gartner still evaluated customer and product master data management in separate Magic Quadrants. Orchestra Networks appeared in both. That matters because EBX5 was already being used as a single platform for more than one data domain, even while the analyst market remained divided by domain.
In the Magic Quadrant for Master Data Management of Customer Data Solutions, Gartner positioned Orchestra Networks as a Visionary. The placement should be stated precisely. Orchestra Networks was not a Leader in this particular chart. Its significance in the 2015 lineage comes from cross-domain presence and the capabilities Gartner documented around EBX5.
What Gartner evaluated in 2015
The customer-data report focused on software that could identify and reconcile customer records across heterogeneous sources, maintain a system or index of record, deliver a consistent customer view, and support stewardship and governance.
Gartner reported that EBX5 version 5.6 had reached general availability in January 2015. The report associated Orchestra Networks with 69 estimated customer-data MDM customers and 105 estimated customers managing multiple data domains.
Why EBX5 stood out
The report described several strengths supporting a broader multidomain story:
- flexible browser-based workflow and data modeling;
- support for XML-based and relational schemas in one hub;
- strong surveyed feedback for innovation, modeling, stewardship, governance, and total cost of ownership;
- metadata-based policy management, including responsibility assignments at entity and attribute level;
- revenue growth in customer-data MDM that Gartner estimated above the segment average.
These were not isolated customer-master features. They reflected a model-driven platform capable of representing different business entities and their relationships.
The cautions are part of the record
Gartner also identified limited visibility in client conversations, only average data-quality scores, and a need for more solution accelerators and a larger delivery ecosystem. A credible history should retain those cautions. A Magic Quadrant placement reflects a particular market definition and time; it is not a product endorsement.
The first half of a two-quadrant signal
The customer-data chart tells only half of the November 2015 story. One day later, Gartner published its product-data MDM quadrant, and Orchestra Networks appeared there too. The classifications differed, but the same EBX5 platform crossed both analyst categories.
