2016 — EBX5 advances as a multidomain platform while Gartner's MDM market model moves from separate customer and product evaluations toward a unified solution category.
The year 2016 is essential to the EBX lineage, but it requires careful wording. Some contemporary vendor announcements later referred to a “2016 Magic Quadrant for Master Data Management Solutions.” The underlying Gartner report, ID G00305598, carries an official publication date of January 19, 2017.
Rather than manufacture a missing annual report, this chapter documents the market transition that occurred between Gartner's November 2015 domain evaluations and the first unified MDM Solutions Magic Quadrant.
Why Gartner changed the evaluation
In the January 2017 report, Gartner explained that it was retiring the separate Magic Quadrants for customer-data and product-data MDM. The replacement addressed a broader market spanning industries, data domains, use cases, organizational structures, and implementation styles.
This was more than combining two charts. Gartner explicitly cautioned that the new evaluation should not be treated as a continuation or simple consolidation of the retired reports. Vendors now had to demonstrate a more complete MDM solution.
EBX5 entered the transition with cross-domain evidence
Orchestra Networks entered 2016 after appearing in both 2015 quadrants with one EBX5 platform. Gartner's 2015 customer report associated it with an estimated 105 customers managing multiple domains. Its product report described experience in reference data, hierarchies, product information, integration, stewardship, and governance.
During 2016, EBX5 version 5.7 reached general availability. By the evidence later evaluated for the first unified report, Orchestra Networks had customers mastering finished products, customer or citizen records, financial data, and other domains.
The market definition was moving toward the architectural premise EBX had pursued: model different master and reference-data domains on a common platform rather than assemble a separate hub for each category.
What this year should and should not claim
The accurate historical signal is:
In 2016, Gartner's MDM research transitioned from separate customer and product evaluations toward a unified MDM Solutions market. Orchestra Networks entered that transition with EBX5 already represented in both former quadrants.
The article should not claim that Orchestra Networks received a new Gartner Leader placement in calendar year 2016. That result belongs to the report published in January 2017.
The threshold moment ahead
When Gartner published the first unified MDM Solutions Magic Quadrant, only Informatica and Orchestra Networks appeared in the Leaders quadrant. For EBX5, that was the conversion of cross-domain potential into recognized leadership under the broader market definition.

Source note
The transition is documented in Gartner, Magic Quadrant for Master Data Management Solutions, Bill O'Kane, Terilyn Palanca, and Michael Patrick Moran, January 19, 2017, ID G00305598, particularly its section on the relationship to the historical domain-specific quadrants.
This chapter should use original timeline artwork. It must not fabricate a 2016 Gartner graphic or reuse the January 2017 quadrant as though Gartner published it in 2016.
