December 12, 2018 — Orchestra Networks earns a third consecutive Leader recognition as TIBCO announces its acquisition of the company.

The 2018 Magic Quadrant for Master Data Management Solutions extended the EBX lineage through a year of both recognition and corporate change. Gartner again placed Orchestra Networks in the Leaders quadrant alongside Informatica. This was the third consecutive MDM Solutions report in which Orchestra Networks held a Leader position.

Days before the report appeared, TIBCO announced its acquisition of Orchestra Networks. The timing creates an important distinction: the 2018 Gartner evaluation names Orchestra Networks, while TIBCO is positioning EBX within its broader data-management portfolio.

The third unified evaluation

The December 2018 report followed the January and October 2017 editions. Contemporary coverage described EBX as a single integrated MDM product with above-average performance across multiple industries and mastered data domains.

The market itself was widening. New vendors entered the evaluation, cloud delivery was becoming more important, and Gartner continued to assess products against a broad solution definition rather than a single customer or product domain.

For Orchestra Networks, continued placement in the Leaders quadrant reinforced the evidence established during 2017: EBX's multidomain design was translating into market execution, customer references, and a sustained position under Gartner's unified criteria.

The acquisition changes the company name, not the product history

TIBCO announced the Orchestra Networks acquisition on December 4, 2018. TIBCO described the company as providing an integrated approach to managing, governing, and consuming shared data assets. EBX added master and reference-data management to a broader TIBCO portfolio spanning integration, analytics, and related data capabilities.

The acquisition did not create a new MDM product from scratch. The accurate lineage is:

Orchestra Networks EBX5 → acquisition by TIBCO → TIBCO EBX

The acquisition connects the Orchestra Networks name used in this report with the EBX product TIBCO is bringing into its portfolio.

What the recognition did not mean

The Leader placement did not constitute a Gartner endorsement, guarantee suitability for every MDM program, or rank EBX as a universal number-one product. It represented Gartner's relative evaluation under the report's market definition and criteria at that time.

Previous: October 2017: EBX5 retains its Leader position Next: January 2020: the lineage continues as TIBCO EBX
